THE NEW containership Axel Johnson made her maiden voyage recently from Sweden via Germany and the UK to the West Coasts of the United States and Canada.
Operated by Johnson Line of Stockholm, the vessel is the first of six to be put into service on this route. Each ship will carry 672 ISO 20ft containers in addition to 200,000 cu,ft of general cargo. There are provisions for carrying refrigerated cargo and containers. Deck and overhead cranes mounted on the ships will enable them to load and unload themselves at ports where no container handling facilities are available.
The round trip to Canada and back via the Panama Canal is expected to take only 56 days, compared with the 84 days taken by existing ships on the service.
