MENTIONED previously in Container Commentary is the establishment of Land Bridges across America and Asia CM, June 6), but I now find that we have a very good example of this concept of container movement in this country.
Containerized traffic from Canada is being shipped into the Manchester Container Terminal by Manchester Liners Ltd. and then sent by road to King's Lynn where it is loaded on the roll-on/roll-off service to Hamburg for delivery in Germany.
This trend, which only started this year. has built up to a regular pattern and is likely to continue because of the savings in total transit time between Canada and Europe. Two or three days is the figure claimed.
I have also heard that a Land Bridge system is operating in reverse with Scandinavian and European traffic coming in through other East Coast ports for onward shipment to North America via Manchester.
