• Continued disagreement with the Transport and General Workers Union over rates of pay for drivers is still delaying the possibility of D. E. Hines (Transport) resuming work after being at a standstill since July 24.

Mr. Ronald Hines, managing director of the Streetly haulage company, told CM on Wednesday that he was still not in a position to decide whether he would be able to continue the business.

None of the vehicles had resumed work since Mr. Alan Law withdrew support for the driver sacked by the firm, the original cause of the strike, and until agreement is reached with the union it is unlikely that any progress towards a resumption of operation will be possible.

Mr. Hines said he had put proposals to the union for consideration but he was informed that unless he was prepared to reinstate all the men, with the exception of the sacked driver, and sign an agreement to pay the Birmingham drivers' rate, then there was no point of wasting Mr. Law's time. Mr. Hine's reply was that he was prepared to reinstate the men as and when there was work for the lorries and he would consider paying the Birmingham rate in three months time.

A meeting on Wednesday at the Birmingham DEP office was called off when, without giving a reason, Mr. Law did not attend. He was not available for comment.
