A LTHO UGH flow meters have been PA. in common use in dealing with fuel at bulk installations, the first tanker vehicles to be so equipped are believed to be those operated by the Vacuum Oil Co.. Ltd., for dispensing Mobilgas. The total capacity of the tank is 2,400 gallons, there being four compartments, each capable of holding up to 600 gallons.

The maximum capacity of the Wayne-Smith flow meter is 125 g.p.m. It is fitted with a drum-type counter which records up to 9,999 gallons, as well as a small totalling counter which records the running total of all deliveries. Both counters register tenths of gallons.

The flow resistance of the meter being negligible, deliveries can be made as fast as by direct gravity without meter. If desired, the meter can be used as a pressure-operated instrument up to 125 lb. per sq. in.

Incorporated in the meter are a strainer and air separator, so that the fuel passes into the customer's tanks free from any possible solid contaminant.

The tank has the standard manhole fittings and dipsticks are carried on the vehicle. Emergency foot valves are fitted to each compartment, with remote control levers mounted alongside the meter. These units are housed in a compartment on the near side of the vehicle.

Covering the tank and providing locker-space for the hoses and other gear is an attractively shaped shell which adds dignity to the vehicle.

The basis of the tanker is a Carrimore semi-trailer with a special gimblertype turntable, and the tractive unit a Bedford. It is one of a number on order by the Vacuum concern. The Steel Barrel Co,, Ltd., PhoeoiX Works, Uxbridge, Middx, built the tank body.
