A FIRE-ENGINE version of the ./—k Land-Rover, incorporating new equipment, will be introduced at the Commercial Motor Show. The inherent characteristics of the Land-Rover make it particularly suited to this duty, as it is easy to maneeuvre and can travel across country, through mud, sand and scrub, without losing traction.

The machine carries 120 ft. of first-aid hose and a 40-gallon first-aid water tank is mounted between the wheel arches.
Amongst the improvements in the Land-Rove r since the 1950 Show is th:, fitting of a 2-litre engine
, and four-wheel drive it i now optional in high transfer and permanent in low. Detail alterations include a radiator grille of new design, side lamps mounted in the front wings, a driving mirror on the Off-side front wing and exterior door handles.
Draught proofing is now more thorough, and optional equipment includes a heater with windscreen demisting nozzles.
MODERN LOCOMOTIVES VOR old and young alike, the steam 1 locomotive has a particular fascination. The electric locomotive undoubtedly holds sway for shortdistanoe travel, but it will be many years before steam goes the way of the horse. In "Modern Locomotives," just published by Temple Press Ltd., boys from 7 to 70 will find much interesting reading.
The book, which forms one of the Boy's "Power and Speed" series, describes, in simple language, how a steam engine works, and how a locomotive is made. The chapter devoted to drivers and their duties gives much "behind the scenes" information.
"Modern Locomotives" contains numerous half-tone illustrations and many explanatory line drawings. Copies are obtainable from booksellers, price 9s. 6d., or direct from the publisher, price 9s. 6d., plus 6d. postage.
