DEPOT EXTENSION OPPOSED
A PROPOSAL by Grimsby Transport 1-1 Department to acquire a waterside site, at present used as a timber yard, next to the bus depot, was opposed at an inquiry held, last week, by Mr. R. A. Youll, for the Minister of Housing and Local Government.
The corporation sought confirmation of its compulsory purchase order for the site. The town clerk said that as a result of tramways conversion, accommodation had to be found for 19 trolleybuses and 55 motorbuses. The redevelopment plan provided for a new depot south of the central market, but this could not be embarked upon for some years.
A director of the company occupying the site said that no other suitable timber storage area was available. Mr. J. West, for Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, stated that the chamber viewed with great concern the takingover of a private deep-water berth at a time when efforts were being made to attract shipping.
Mr. Youll, in closing the hearing, declared that he would pay a visit to the site.
6d. FOOTBALL FARE?
TO ease financial difficulties and to
relieve congestion on other vehicles, Glasgow Transport Committee proposes that a service of special buses and trams be run from the city centre to various football grounds at a fare of 6d. per journey.
It is suggested that the vehicles be driven direct to the grounds and should not pick up passengers en route. The convenor of the committee said that if people did not want to pay 6d. fare they could travel on the ordinary service at the usual rate.
The proposal will be forwarded to the corporation.
