Your paper contained an Interesting article by Mr Paul Brockington (Technitopics, April 1) about a spark-assisted low-compression diesel engine.
Before the war the Waukesha factory in the USA and also manufacturers in Sweden produced an engine called the Hesselman on these lines.
It was used in trucks, buses and boats and performed well under load, but light running was erratic so I should say it was more suited to marine operations than to use on the road.
Modern ignition systems should be able to improve light running to an acceptable standard without any great changes to the engine proper.
Personally I would not describe such an engine as a diesel; a diesel is, strictly speaking, a compression ignition engine pure and simple.
