Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AS PART of a research and development programme, Leyland Truck and Bus is spending £500,000 on two test facilities and a new dynamometer.

Half the sum has been used to help develop truck and bus transmissions, while a further £200,000 is for an electro-hydraulic unit which is capable of simulating road loads of all types under varying operating conditions.

This will be used to check components ranging from a single item to complete vehicles.

In addition to these two test _rigs an £80,000 dynamometer is also to be installed.

Housed in Truck and Bus groups test operations building at Spurrier Works, Leyland, it is hoped that the test rigs will enable test programmes to be speeded-up.

The transmission test section is able to check transmissions for the smallest of trucks up to those with engine outputs of 298kW (400bhp).

All the gears in the box can be tested on load and the overrun.

As well as controlling speed and torque, the temperature can also be regulated.

In addition gearboxes with built-in retarders may also be checked. An automatic failure sensing system built into the rig disengages the gearbox from full load in 16 milliseconds.

Loads between 5.1 and 25.4 tonnes (5 and 25tons) can be simulated on the electro-hydraulic component test rig.

The first section of the rig came into operation in 1973 and was able to handle three channels of base information recorded by vibration sensors on either the test track or road.

With the extended rig, six control channels can be used. Jacks are used to apply the required loads, and these are powered by electrically driven hydraulic pumps.

A chassis cab can be tested with the new facility at the same time as two or three other components.
