OWN-ACCOUNT operators could not afford to have problems with transport. It was often a vital part of the business and it was in their own interest to keep a close watch on the transport side.
This was said by the Yorkshire Licencing Authority, Major General V. H. J. Carpenter, when he renewed an 0 licence at Leeds last week.
Turner and Wells (Timber Merchants) of Pontefract, were seeking renewal of their licence for three vehicles and five trailers in possession, with three vehicles and four trailers to be acquired.
Vehicle examiner John Fielden said he examined two vehicles and two trailers and issued three defect notices. There were no inspection records.
Reginald Turner, a partner in the firm said he relied upon a commercial garage for maintenance. He had been under the impression that records were being kept by the garage.
Proper records were now being kept and it was intention to increase the i by two vehicles. When happened a transport mam would be employed.
Granting renewal M, General Carpenter said vehicles obviously toot hammering and the firm to be more diligent maintenance than the nor operator.
