Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A PROPOSED new bus station for

York, connected by subway to the railway station, may become a reality as the result of a meeting between the streets and buildings sub-committee of York Corporation and representatives of the British Transport Commission.

The B.T.C. has agreed in principle that it would be prepared to exchange land in the Old Station Yard at York, for a similar sized area in the Cambridge Street district.

About two acres of land in the Old Station Yard, at present covered by sidings and rail installations, would be required.

The Transport Commission proposes to submit sketch plans for the new sidings c6 it will require in lieu of bus station land, within a fortnight. A special meeting of the streets and buildings committee will receive the information and submit recommendations to a full York City Council meeting on May 2.

At present, bus services in York work from scattered points, and open stands, with passengers exposed to the vagaries of the weather.

Main operators in the area are West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., using the Rougier Street stands, their York-West Yorkshire subsidiary running all town services and converging on the railway station; East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., operating from stands at Piccadilly; and York Pullman Bus Co., operating from Piccadilly and Exhibition Square.
