CCHARGES of receiving a C licence knowing that it had been stolen, and of using the document with intention to defraud were admitted by Frank Robert Clarke, Brooks Avenue, East Ham, London, E.6, at Stratford, East London, last week. A charge of stealing the licence was withdrawn, but he was 'fined a total of 115.

Det.-sgt. Arthur Fitch said that on November 29, 1959, Clarke was stopped by an inspector while driving a lorry in Upper Thames Street, and it was later found that the licence had been issued to a transport company of Uphall Road, Ilford, by whom Clarke • had been employed until last September.

Clarke told the police that he had not stolen the licence. After leaving the concern, a man approached him in public house and they spoke about a licence for a lorry which he had bought. It was arranged that Clarke should pay. the man 15 a week to use a licence he had obtained.. He 'used 'the licence for two weeks before he was stopped.

Wages More Than Doubled

For Clarke, Mr. John Daybell said that he was employed by the company for four years. He was manager at the time he left with a wage Of f15 per week. The proprietor agreed that he could do piecework, and he 'worked for two or three weeks doing exactly, the same work as previously but his wages came to £33 per week. The proprietor refused to pay and Clarke left.

He then. obtained a vehicle and Worked with it for two or three Weeks without a licence. He was then offered the licence and paid £5 a week for the benefit of it. As a result of the transaction, he had lost £300 because his lorry bad been returned to the finance company and he was left with a balance to pay..
