USERS of wolfram ore utilized in the manufacture of tungsten for highspeed tool steels are warned that seven tons of the ore, valued at £4,000, were stolen from the premises of a road haulage firm in London over the Easter holidays. The ore was packed in 140 bags and belonged to Derby and Co., Ltd., ore suppliers. It was loaded on a lorry ready for delivery to the north and locked in a warehouse. Men returning from the Easter break found they could not enter the warehouse because the padlocks had been changed. When they got in, they found the lorry had gone. It was later found empty at St. Pancras and the lorry floor had been swept clean. About a dozen concerns in the country use wolfram for making tungsten. About half of these are in Sheffield. It is an unusual robbery as the market for the ore is limited. Only five concerns in the country normally supply it.
