A FORMER employee of Northern rA Motor Utilities and British Road Services, Charles William Coates. was sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment at York Quarter Sessions last week. He admitted 10 charges of. fraudulent conversion involving £2,784—money in three societies of which he was treasurer. Mr. Alan Goss, prosecuting, said that. except for service in the R.A.F., Coates had been employed in York for 29 years by B.R.S. and their predecessors., From April, 1956, to November, 1959, he was secretary and treasurer of three welfare associations, run for the benefit of employees. Coates, after paying out cash to members, put the balance into his own pocket. Losses Came to light when the chairman of one of the societies suggested that the books should be checked. Coates made excuses and disappeared for a time.

" ARTICS" SAFER FOR STEEL

THE added safety of special type articulated vehicles for carrying steel was successfully argued at Penrith, last week, when Burnholme Transport (Penrith), Ltd., were granted variation of their A licence enabling them to substitute two articulated for two rigid vehicles. The application was heard by Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing Authority.
