COACH SUMMONS: CONCERN BY MAGISTRATE

WHEN Stephen Wade, Waterdale, Doncaster, was summoned at Sheffield last week for using a coach to carry 36 passengers instead of the permitted -33, Cllr. M. J. Sewell, presiding, said that he was concerned at the way the case was being presented.

Colin Hill, driver of the coach, was summoned for failing to comply with the same regulations, also for not keeping the gangway clear when passengers were being carried. Wade was charged with aiding and abetting this latter offence.

Wade, who denied both offences, was fined £5 on the first, but the charge of aiding and abetting was withdrawn after the magistrates' clerk had asked the prosecution: "Where is the evidence of aiding and abetting the offence? You must prove some knowledge on his part that the offence was being committed."

CONVERSIONS OF ROUTES rERTA1N trolleybus services were l■-• converted on Monday to motorbus operation by Manchester Transport Department, as forecast in The Commercial Motor on March 4. Services have been extended across the city to provide cross-routes.

Last Sunday, Bradford Corporation converted a motorbus route to trolleybus working.

B.R.S. CHARGE MORE rHARGES much higher than those of 4•-• private operators were being made by British Road Services, it was alleged on Monday at a meeting of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. The directors are to raise the qUestion with the chief officer of B.R.S. in Scotland.

DEATH OF MR. D. J. DAVIES
