Three unusual requests for B licences came before Mr. W. Chamberlain, North-Western Licensing Authority, in Manchester, last Friday, and the parties concerned were told that there did not appear to be any difficulty about the matter at all. The point raised is in regard to Section 12 of the 1933 Act and the provisions as to holding and subsidiary companies, and the parties did not appear to know what their circumstances required.

Mr. 0. L. Spedding, metal and machine merchant, of Manchester; J. Sykes (Charcoals), Ltd., of Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne; and Lloyd Chromium Plating Co., Ltd., were asking for B licences in substitution for C licences to enable them to can-y each other's goods and the goods of five other associate-companies.

There was no opposition and the chief point at issue was whether C licences were sufficient to meet all the requirements of the case. Mr. Chamberlain said that, although there appeared to be no particular difficulty, he would refrain from giving an immediate decision.

The *new road will be over 2+ miles long, and the provisional cost is estimated at 2150,000. It will form an additional and more direct route for traffic between Croydon and the industrial area bordering the lower. reaches of the Thames, and will bring relief to the routes in Lewisham.

The first section of the scheme is being undertaken by Lewisham Borough Council and will cost about 221,000.
