Firm fined after workers burnt waste for warmth

A MIDDLESBROUGH haulage company has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £46,045 after some of its workers illegally burned waste on site in order to keep warm.
The fine was handed out to A Buckler Haulage at Teesside Magistrates Court on Wednesday 20 September following a successful prosecution by the Environment Agency.
Environment Agency witnesses told the magistrates that the firm was the holder of a valid Waste Management Licence, but they pointed out that it stipulated waste was not to be burnt on site.
The licence conditions also called for any fires to be reported to the agency immediately.
However, the agency said it had been told of a number of instances in which waste was burnt on the Lloyd Street site, and despite several warnings these fires had continued.
Company director Mark Love had told the agency that he had no knowledge of the terms of the licence. He explained that the fires had been caused by employees trying to keep warm and by vagrants who had illegally entered the site.
When it appeared in court the firm pleaded guilty, saying it had now installed a heated cabin, a new gate and CCTV.
