• The Road Haulage and Distribution Council's Young LGV Driver Scheme, stopped three years ago because of the recession, is to be revived in 1996 The revamped scheme, which will have close links with modern apprenticeships and NVQs, is to provide driving lessons to all haulage company employees below the age of 21.
The training will be a mixture of day release— supported by local Training and Enterprise Councils— and practical experience with the trainee's employer.
Under the scheme a trainee will be able to take the LGV test before they are 21, but will have to pass the rigid test before going for the the C+E articulated vehicle licence.
The RHDC is contacting employers who formerly took part in the scheme and has sent out questionnaires to try and gain support.
