• Restrictions on the hire of lorries in the EC will be removed by 30 June next year under proposals put forward by the Brussels Commission this month (September).
At present, EC governments are able to impose a mininrnum hire period and bar ownaccount operators from hiring vehicles.
Britain and five other EC countries have not applied any restrictions. Germany imposes a minimum hire period of six months and exempts ownaccount hauliers.
The Commission says that hire vehicles give hauliers a wider choice, lower operating costs and enable them to cope with sudden peaks in demand.
