• A truck driver, who removed one of the axles from his unloaded tandem-axle trailer because of a defective bearing, was acquitted of driving an unroadworthy vehicle last week.
Arthur Albert Carr, who works for Speedy Delivery Services of London E16, was supported by his employer at the West Ham Magistrates Court hearing. Representations were also heard from trailer manufacturer Crane Fruehauf, which said this was standard practice in the case of an emergency.
