Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• South Yorkshire Transport has purchased one independent company and is about to take over another in a bid to strengthen its position in Sheffield.

Sheafline, the independent which had its operator's licence revoked, (CM 21-27 Sept), sold out to SYT last week, and Sheffield & District will be taken over next month.

The 26-vehicle Sheafline had been supported by Drawline subsidiary North Western, and was using eight NW vehicles when its own were found to be Sheffield & District was a Caldaire subsidiary formed by West Riding in 1986. Its share capital has been swapped for the operations of Wakefieldbased Compass Bus which was jointly owned by SYT and Paul Bell.

Both companies will continue trading under their new owners, although Caldaire will retain its garage in Sheffield and SYT will lease it in the short term.

The new S & D will relax its competition with SYT but will become the nucleus of a new SYT free-standing low-cost division.
