Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I WAS MOST interested to read Know the Law — Hazard Warning Labels (3) (CM, September 14).

I feel I should point out, however, that the word inflammable as shown in the Inflammable Liquid and Inflammable Solid signs is not in the Road Tanker Marking Regulations (SI.1702).

The error no doubt arose from the confusion which exists at present with regard to certain minor differences between the original CIA voluntary scheme and the now compulsory tanker marking regulations.

You may appreciate that my company is very much involved with these regulations. We were in fact producing signs showing inflabmmable (to CIA recommendations) up to the publication of SI.1702.

Following publication of the regulations, J. F. Adams of ICI was kind enough to approach the Health and Safety Executive on our behalf in order to clarify the flammable/inflammable anomaly.

The reply to Mr Adams representations on flammable/ inflammable was as follows: " 'Flammable' and 'toxic' The Executive maintains that the Commission has endorsed the view that Health and Safety at Work legislation should consciously use "flammable' and 'toxic' without provisions for alternatives."'
