PADENNE of Italy is the latest coach bodybuilder considering building vehicles for the British market.
A spokesman for the Modena-based company told CM at the recent Frankfurt Show that the company was at present building a pilot vehicle for a British operator on a rear-engined sub-structure.
He said that the bodybuilder would not build a mid-engined chassis as it considered that the concept was "twenty years out of date."
The British operator, Trathens of Yelverton, Devon, has ordered the vehicle with all possible optional extras, including air-conditioning and air suspension. The coach is being built on a MercedesBenz 0303 chassis.
Trathens has also ordered more normal-height Spanishbuilt Irizar-bodied coaches to join the deck-and-a-half vehicle already in service.
Van Hool of Belgium had on show at Frankfurt its Fiatengined Alligator articulated coach, and a spokesman told CM that despite the present British regulations banning articulated psv in Britain except under special dispensation, Van Hool hopes soon to begin building an Alligator Jumbulance for the Surrybased Across Foundation.
The Across foundation operates a fleet of coach-sized ambulances which carry stretchered patients on Continental tours to destinations such as Lourdes, France.
Also on show at the Neoplan stand at Frankfurt was a double-deck bus in a livery familiar to British operators.
Wahl of Heidenheim, West Germany, is to take delivery of a Neoplan low height doubledeck city-bus for the local public transport in Heidenheim. Wahl also runs coaches from many European capitals, including London.
