A SELF-EMPLOYED driver, Alan Whitefield of Paddington, was fined a total of £225 at Newton-le-Willow Magistrates Court for carrying a load in excess of the plated weight of his vehicle. When Whitefield • said he was "in the red" and could not afford to pay the fine, he was ordered to pay at the rate of £10 a week.

John Downes of the County Council Trading Standards Department, said that the offences concerned a load of sand Mr Whitifield was carting from Warrington Slate. The gross weight of the lorry was 25 per cent in excess of the gross weight shown on the plating certificate. The weight of one axle was 37 per cent above the limit and the weight of another 9.6 per cent.

Mr Whitefield told the court that when sand was wet, the weight increased by 38 per cent, but at Warrington Slate Co the sand was loaded in a bucket from a mechanical digger.

He was fined £75 for exceeding the gross loaded weight of the vehicle and £75 on each of two charges of exceeding gross axle weights.
