The Paris Show

A Forecast of the Panhard, Renault, Berliet, Delahaye, Latil, Rochet-Schneider, Somua and Lorraine-Dietrich Displays

THE Paris Motor Show is being held this year from October 4-14, in difficult circumstances. French export trade in motor vehicles has been virtually killed by the high exchange value of the franc in the world's money markets, but this is not the only factor

• working against commercial-vehicle prosperity in France.

When the horse-power tax was removed, last February, the French Government replaced it by a oig increase in taxation on motor fuels of all kinds, giving special attention to Diesel oils. The oil-engine business, which was just beginning to flourish, received a most severe blow. In addition, the Government has introduced a. series of perplexing—and, in some cases, selfcontradictory—regulations with regard to weights, overall dimension, tyres, etc., throwing the whole industry into confusion.

Consequently, there will be few novelties at the Show. We are, however, able to publish advance information of some of the most important exhibits.

Two New Panhard Models.

Panhard-Levassor will exhibit two new models, one being a light chassis designed for a maximum load of 1,800 kilos. It is to be an " economy " model, special attention having been directed to fuel consumption. The four-cylindered engine has a bore and stroke of 89 mm. and 103 mm. respectively (2.563 litres), and the Panhard four-silent-speed gearbox is employed. The other new type is a 4}-tormer with a 6.334-litre four-cylindered petrol engine, four-speed gearbox and doublereduction axle.

The company will also show several gas-driven vehicles, including the car with which it recently obtained a 100,000-franc prize offered by the Minis

try of Agriculture. Panhard oil-engined chassis will, of course, again be in evidence.

Renault has added two new models to its important range. These comprise 41-ton chassis with an 85 b.h.p. overhead-valve petrol engine and an 8-10ton tractor employing the same type of power unit. Another Renault exhibit will be a 27-seater coach equipped with the maker's big 120 mm.. by 130 mm. four-cylindered petrol engine which develops 100 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. All Renault petrol engines now have the cylinder block cast in one with the crankcase, The oil engines remain unaltered.

Berliet will again show its cemplete range of eight four-Cylinder and sixcylinder chassis, some having oil engines. The most important improvement, this year, is in the matter of oilengine cylinder-wall lubrication. The Berliet company is also improving its gas-driven models.

Delahaye will, as usual, show many fire-engines. The full range of Delahaye vehicles for municipal and general purposes will also be exhibited without change for 1935.

In addition to its usual wide range of petrol-engined vehicles, the Latil concern will exhibit chassis with Gardner four-cylindered and six-cylindered oil engines. Another Latil novelty to be seen" this year is the fast 30-cwt. chassis with fourcylinderd 75 ram. by 120 mm. engine,

Rochet Schneider will be showing a new 4-ton petrol eng-ined chassis with four-cylindered 100 mm. by 140 mm. power unit, there being a short model for goods work and a long low-level, type for passenger service. Another exhibit will be the Centaure six-wheeler with 100 mm. by 115 mm. oil engine delivering 115 b.h.p. Two four-cylindered oilers will also be displayed.

Somua will be showing a series of vehicles which comply with the new French regulations as to length, weight and width. These include a petrolengined bus chassis for a 53-passenger body, a new 10-ton lorry, and a 15-ton six-wheeled oiler. A range of municipal vehicles will also be on view, a unit,of special interest being the three-wheeled sweeper, which is capable of cleaning 8,000 sq. in. of road surface per hour. The Faun refuse collector, for which Somua obtained a manufacturing licence last year, will be shown.

Unusual Design.

The Lorraine-Dietrich Co., now reconstructed under the name of Automobiles Lorraine, has taken up French manufacturing rights for Tatra products, and a range of these vehicles will be shown, including the interesting light chassis with opposed-cylinder aircooled engine and the four-wheel-drive types with oscillating axles.

An eye-witness report of the Show will appear in our issue dated October 12.
