MUNICIPAL SUPPORT FOR B-LICENCE APPLICANT.

At a sitting of the Southern Scotland Licensing Authority, Mr. T. E. Streeter, contractor, Dalbeatie, applied for six B licences covering motor vehicles owned by him, to be employed in Nirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire. There were many objections, whilst SteWax-try County Council supported the application.

The objectors had, in the past, been contractors for the country council, and the rate which they had asked was, it was submitted, economic. Mr. Streeter's intervention had displaced a number of vehicles.

For the applicant it was argued that the evidence and submissions of the objectors had only succeeded in establishing the necessity of granting Mr. Streeter at least the number of licences applied for, on account of his large volume of work, and the efficiency of Stewartry County Council in administering public affairs from the point of view of the ratepayers.

It was quite evident, it was submitted, that the objectors had formed a " ring " for the purpose of increasing the cost of haulage to the county council. Mr. Streeter had been the successful tenderer in this case, and he was quite satisfied with the prices received.

Without comment, the Licensing Authority granted the licences.

Big-capacity Refuse Collector for Ipswich.

An interesting petrol-engined refuse collector has recently been placed in service by Ipswich Corporation, which, .until recently, used electric vehicles exclusively for refuse-collection work. The new machine—a Morris-Commercial forward-control 3-tonner—has a , large all-steel van body of approximately if* cubic yds. capacity, embodying a Transport hand-operated noving floor, made by Transport Engineering, Ltd.

Loading is effected from the rear and the barrier method employed compresses the refuse, thus enabling the capacity of the body to be used to the fullest extent. The driver's cab has accommodation for four men. The vehicle was purchased through Messrs. Lock and Stagg, Friars Road, Ipswich.
