A NOTTINGHAMSHIRE operator has been fined 110,000 with 12,446 costs for polluting a local river with diesel, B Taylor and Sons Transport of Kirby in Ashfteld pleaded guilty to letting diesel spill into the River Maun on Christmas Eve 2003.
Mansfield magistrates heard that the Environment Agency received a report of diesel in the river. An officer visited the site and found diesel in the brook, which he traced to a surface water sewer outfall.
Severn Water then traced the diesel to a manhole cover near Taylor's premises. Officers initially found no obvious signs of diesel in the yard but the MD told them there had been a spillage which had been cleaned up.
For the company, Trevor Symonds told the court that a 50gallon drum of diesel spilt on site; the cause of the problem was unknown to the company.
Speaking after the case, EA officer Yvonne Wetton said: "Companies handling environmentally harmful materials such as diesel must ensure that they do not pollute the environment and, if a spillage does occur, they take action to limit its impact.
"This incident resulted in damaging and costly pollution."
