• Signposts on English motorways and trunk roads will be transformed over the next three years, the Government has promised, Transport Minister Lord Whitty has condemned urban signs as "outdated, unclear and incomplete".
The Highways Agency (HA) is to embark an a six-point plan designed to cut accidents and delays.
In the next few months HA web-site visitors will be quizzed on what information they want. By 2001 all primary routes within the M25 will be re-signed, while 45% of motorway and trunk roads will have electronic message signing, giving information on traffic conditions and alternative routes. And 15% of motorways will be equipped with signs linked to detectors which will warn of any problems.
By 2002 half of all major motorway junctions are due to be equipped with message signs. Traffic control centres will feed In real-time data on adverse conditions and suggest other routes.
