ri Strong demand in western Europe has helped lift Scania's operating profit by 46% for the first nine months of the year.

Scania chief executive Leif Dstling reports an operating profit of £240m (SKr3.64bn): he adds that there is no evidence so far that sales are being hit by the planned merger with Volvo.

West European truck sales increased by 13% to 25,717 compared with the same period last year, while the global total rose by 2% to 33,275. Order bookings rose 3% in western Europe although they remained flat in the UK.

However. in eastern and central Europe sales fell from 1,778 to 988. Scania is now predicting a total west European market of more than 230,000 for 1999.
