• Hauliers who want to buy new trucks on the Internet will have to wait, despite Vauxhall's introduction of direct electronic sales on its web site. Leyland Dat Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Iveco Ford and Volvo all predict that operators will eventually be selecting and paying for their vehicles in a single visit to a web site, and some of them expect this service to be available within two years.
They warn that complex specifications, additional dealer services and haggling make a CV transaction more complicated than buying a car.
But some manufacturers and their dealers have already set up sites which advertise used trucks, and MercedesBenz says one of its dealers has sold used vans through electronic mail "without talking to the customer until delivery".
