• Austria's entry into the EC is largely dependent on negotiations over its environmental transport policy.
According to the Commission Austria says the environmental factors of road transit are of "paramount importance". The Commission is trying to negotiate equality for hauliers crossing Austria and wants the country to scrap its eco-points system, which runs until 2003 in its current form, It wants to avoid discrimination between Austrian vehicles and non-Austrian vehicles transiting the country.
However, it is willing to allow the system to continue if it is restricted to the Alpine region.
