Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Foden remains committed to offering Caterpillar engines as an option in its UK heavy truck range—although it has still to decide which Cat engines it will fit to meet the latest Euro-1 emission laws.

Until now Foden has fitted the 10.5-litre 3306 and 14-litre 3406 Cat diesels. But with the advent of Euro-1 regs it might decide to switch to the all-electronic 10-litre 3176 engine and the latest electronically controlled overhead cam 14-litre revealed exclusively in CM two weeks ago.

CM understands that Cat has yet to put any engines through Euro-1 UK type approval but that process is likely to be spurred on by any decision from Foden as to its ultimate Cat engine choice.

Foden is also hoping to be the first European truck maker to take the latest larger capacity M11 Cummins Engine (CM 1521 July). Before the end of next year a prototype M11-powered Foden demonstrator could be running in the UK.

While the M11 straight six has officially been launched in the US it is not expected to appear in Europe much before the start of the Euro-2 emission regs deadline due in 1995/96.
