• Local hauliers are up in arms over the scrapping of a planned motorway link road between the MI and M62 near Huddersfield.
The proposed route was dropped by the Government last week following a vigorous campaign by local protesters. Rapide UK Freight Services general manager Adrian Russell says: "This link was needed and the decision is ludicrous. Every day I see the congestion drivers have to put up with, and it is horrendous in this area."
Chiefs at the Freight Transport Association are also worried that other road building schemes in the region could be scuppered. Spokesman John Hicks says: "This could set a dangerous precedent for the planned MI -Al link.
"I thought we were winning the battle for better roads, but now we seem to be going backwards."
