Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Midland hauliers operating 1,750 vehicles a week could be forced to run 10 miles out of their way to avoid a proposed truck ban which Hereford & Worcester County Council will decide in three weeks' time. The council is considering an eastwards-only three-mile restriction on the A4133 between Ombersley and Droitwich.

One Droitwich haulier has attacked the ban: "It's obviously cheaper for the council to ban trucks rather than sort out the road itself. But any ban will only transfer the problem to someone else's patch."

But county senior traffic engineer Peter Stevens says: "The HGV lobby is telling us it will cost them a lot of money but the road is not suitable for two trucks passing.

▪ Trucks could be banned from Church Street in Whitby, North Yorks, after a pedestrian was knocked down and buildings damaged by LGVs. More than 20 trucks an hour deliver to shops in the street during peak hours, but North Yorks County Council says the cobbled cul-desac cannot cope. It will decide whether to restrict LGVs before next summer.
