A NEW BRS general haulage depot was
opened on Wednesday by Mr. R. R. Spink, provost of Arbroath. The new depot, on the Elliott Industrial Estate, provides greatly improved operational and warehousing facilities for the fleet of 29 vehicles, most of which are articulated.
Industrial developments in the Arbroath area led to the steady expansion of the 16-vehicle fleet of Stewart Brothers (Contractors) Ltd., which was acquired by the BTC in 1949. The Tay Bridge too, for some Arbroath area traffic, will promote development.
At a luncheon to celebrate the opening, Mr. Spink stressed the vitally important part played by road haulage in the prompt arid reliable delivery of locally produced manufactures and criticized the so-called rationalization of British Railways activities at Montrose.
"To convey goods beyond their destination or to insist on pick-ups by a remote station is crazy," he said, and he referred to handling of goods no less than eight times at Montrose with from six to 10 days' delay as a result.
Mr. Spink, who said he spoke as a former lorry driver, criticized as a retrograde step the detrunking of the important A92 road. This would involve local authorities in great expense and he hoped road haulage interests would protest vigorously.
