ROSPA. SPEEDING RULE DISPUTE RESENTING safety awards to corn1 pony drivers on Monday, • Mr. W. M. Dravers, general manager of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., referred to the dispute between operators and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents over the rules of the safe-driving competition.

The competition, he said, had been running smoothly for a long time, but a difference of opinion had arisen over el-te rule that a conviction for speeding was an automatic disqualification.

" We feel the rule may work very harshly," stated Mr. Drovers. Speeding was not in itself necessarily dangerous. A driver doing 35 m.p.h. on an open road might not be jeopardizing road safety in the slightest degree, yet rnight lose his award, whilst another travelling at half that speed in a built-up area might be really

dangerous. : We say that there should be discretion as to whether awards should be granted or withheld in speeding eases, depending on whether or not there has been an element of .danger."

The Society's executive is to discuss the matter next Friday.
