CURTAILED use of hired. transport `‘...o is suggested in a report presented to the city council by Manchester Highways Committee. Haying regard to the number of hired vehicles employed (averaging 21 per day from AprilAugust, 1949), the report expresses the opinion that the committee's own fleet could be ' increased and kept continuously at work at a lower cost than by hiring.
it is further suggested that 14 of the present operational fleet of 34 vehicles (ranging from 2-6 tons carrying capacity) could be replaced by 14 5-tonners with drop sides. Delivery of five vehicles is expected in 1950-51, and nine in 1951-52.
The finance committee, whilst Approving the. proposal, considered that there should be a further report on comparative operating costs and a programme of work for which the vehicles are likely to be required before any addition should be made to the fleet.
