Our Paris Correspondent Sends Details of the Claveau, which Possesses Novel Features

AA N interesting new light parcelsdelivery van has just made its appearance in Paris under the name of Claveau. It is probable that this little vehicle will shortly be seen in England, as we understand that negotiations have been completed with an important British concern for its manufacture, under licence, in this country.

Messrs. Claveau have for some years been carrying out experiments with vehicles in which integral construction for chassis and bodywork is adopted. Claveau vehicles have no frame, strictly speaking, apart from the pressed-steel body.

The engine is a vertical-twin water-cooled two-stroke unit with a cylinder capacity of 750 c.c. Crankcase compression is avoidpd by the employment of an eccentrically driven induction pump, the drive for this being taken off the centre of the crankshaft. Pressure lubrication on up-to-date lines is installed and the engine is stated to develop 30 b.h.p. at 3,000 r.p,ni.

Ignition is by Delco distributor and 12-volt battery. The pressedsteel body of the vehicle is stiffened internally by ribs and is traversed at front and rear by stout tubular members. Front-wheel drive has been adopted ; this is a form of transmission which appears particularly suitedto vehicles for parcelsdelivery work, owing to the extra space which can be obtained at the rear by dropping the floor of the body lower than can be done with rear transmission.

The engine is built up as a unit with a three-speed gearbox and. Gleason spiral-bevel transmission, in corporating a differential. Large spherical joints are fitted at each end of the cardan shafts to the front driving wheels, which, of course, also steer the vehicle.

The clutch is of the single-plate type and a transmission brake is fitted, in addition to -the usual fourwheel brakes. Independent suspension is provided for the front wheels by means of stout helical springs working in steel cylinders, these containing a bath of thick oil.

Ordinary, half-elliptic springs are used for the rear suspension. This parcelvan, fitted with a roomy body accommodating about 7 c*t. of goods, is to be marketed in France at a price representing 1110. The makers are Automobiles Claveau, 22, Place de la Madeleine, Paris.
