Another Example of Passenger-service Operators Jointly Facing the Licensing Problems.
AN important move towards coordination has been taken by 12 private motorbus and coach proprietors in the North of England, who have formed themselves into the Northern Transport Owners' Association. The object of the organization is that concerted action may be taken on any licensing matters which may arise over the operation of the Road Traffic Act.
The decision to form the association was taken at a meeting in Newcastle, when Mr. Joseph Orange, of the firm of Messrs. Orange Brothers, Bedlington and Newcastle, pioneers of the Newcastle-London service, was elected chairman for the time being.
The operators who have definitely identified themselves with the new movement control among them about 130 buses and coaches, and operate over both long and short-distance routes.
It is explained that membership, will be open to private operators in the new Northern Traffic Area, as defined by the Minister of Transport for the functioning of the Road Traffic Act. The strength of the association will be at the disposal of its members in licensing applications and appeals, and advice will be given so that services will be run strictly in accordance with the Act.
It is felt that in this way better services will be provided for the public. Affiliation with the Motor Hirers and Coach Services Association is to be sought.
It was stated by an official that the
formation of the association did not mean that there would be an extension of the Present facilities for inter. availability of tickets. It would simply deal with licensing and legal matters affecting its members.
