An Analysis° of Petrol-bus and Trolley-bus Operations During the Past Municipal Year.

THE municipal authorities of Nottin ghara own a big fleet of buses, and at the end of March last the team consisted of 105 petrol buses and 24 trolley-buses, the former being made up of 60 A.E.C.s, 40 of Dennis make and 5 Maudslays, whilst the trolley-bus fleet comprises 10 Railless 52-seaters, eight of Ransorae make and six English

Electrics. All the trolley-buses are double-saloon vehicles.

The report of the passenger-transport committee for the year ended March 31st last reveals that the motorbuses were operated at a gross profit of £11,915, whilst the surplus of income over expenditure in the case of the trolley-buses was £11,461. The income

from the operation of petrol buses totalled £136,828, whilot---axpenditure amounted to 1124,913, the main heads under which it was incurred being as follow ;----Traffic expenses, £61,308; purchase of petrol, £29,930; maintenance anti repairs, £27,038; general expenses, £3,867. The revenue account for trolley-buses shows that the total income was £34,519, whilst expenses amounted to £23,058.

During the year under review the motorbuses covered a mileage of 2,948,414, and the trolley-buses one of 464,266, the number of actual farepaying passengers carried by the former vehicles being 17,979,066 and by the latter 6,458,507. The average rates of fare charged per mile on the petrol buses was .79d. for ordinary fares and .52d. for workmen's fares, the comparable figures for the trolley-buses being .94d. and .62d. respectively. The summary of the working of the passenger-transport department shows that the total receipts from the operation of all classes of vehicle were £508,740, working expenses totalling 1413,588. After meeting interest, income tax, and redemption of debt charges, the reserve and renewals fund receives an allotment of £27,183, this contrasting with a sum of £8,024 for the previous year, when £20,480 was used in aid of the general district rates ; no such assistance is forthcoming from the past year's operations.

During the past year the bus fleet was increased by the provision of 20 single-deckers and 20 double-saloon buses of the latest six-cylinder type ; a number of old vehicles was removed from service. Increased revenue has resulted. The trolley-buses were augmented by 12 six-wheelers.
