French ministers and police threatened to revoke drivers' licences if they blocked roads. This tactic seems to have worked as only one blockade remained at Clermont Ferrand on Tuesday morning 126 November).

French drivers initially mounted a number of "fitter blockades" (where cars were allow to pass through) and three full blockades. The main problem areas were Paris, Lille. The blockades were organised by France's two largest road transport unions, CFO! and CGT. They are campaigning for an enhanced package of pay and conditions, including 13 months' pay for 12 months' work. They also want a shorter working week and a retirement age of 55.
