THE Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply was asked in.. the House of Commons last week if he was aware that a number of commercial vehicles was at present unusable owing to a shortage of tyres, attributable 1.0 turn to a scarcity of unskilled labour.,

Mr. Harold Macmillan replied that he had no information . to that effect. All cases of urgent requirements for tyres, which had been notified to the Ministry of Supply, had been met.

He added that the labour situation in this industry was under constant review by the Ministries of Supply and of Labour and National Service, and that, with the assistance of the industry, special measures were being taken to meet the requiremedasts.

GIVE THE TROOPS LIFTS, SAYS COL. LLEWELLIN

AREMINDER to drivers came from. Col. Llewellin in the House last week to the effect that men of all three Services, when on short leave, much appreciated "'lifts." He commented that, in thus helping men on their way, drivers we doing a real good turn for those who deserved it.

PROVISIONAL INSTRUCTION BOOK ON MAUDSLAY MOGUL

Parkside, Coventry, has just come to hand a copy of a new instruction book dealing with, the Mogul 6-tonner, It is described as a " provisional " book and is considerably smaller than most comparable publications, whilst having but few illustrations. Nevertheless, it contains much useful, not to say indispensable, information and should be in the hands' of all operators of these vehicles.

" EXPRESS CARRIERS" ACTIVE IN THE SOUTH-WEST

AMEETING of the National Conference of Express Carriers was recently held in Bristol, when the chairman, Mr. C. S. Dunbar, M.Inst.T., addressed members on recent activities of the Conference and developments in the road-transport industry generally. Mr. A. Packbam was elected representative for the south-western area on the National Council of the Conference.

Any " smalls" carriers operating in the south-western area, or with branches in that area, should communicate with the acting secretary, Mr. E. F. Knill; of Pickfords, Ltd„ Victoria Street, Bristol.

SHELVOKE AND DREWRY HAS A GOOD YEAR

IN the year ended July 31, 1941,

Shelvoke and Drewry. Ltd., made a profit of £42,278. compared with £6,963 in respect of the previous year's trading.

This year the company is paying a 10 per cent, dividend, whilst £15,000 is applied for reducing the development account. Reserve for depreciation receives £3,000 and taxation reserve £15,000, leaving £2,521 to be carried forward.

INSURANCE OF COMMODITIES AGAINST WAR RISKS • THE Board of Trade has, with the 1 approval of the Treasury; decided that the rate of premium payable under any policy of insurance, issued under the Commodity Insurance Scheme, for the period December 3. 1941, to March 2, 1942, shall be 7s. 6d. per cent. per month.

DEATH OF ELECTRIC-VEHICLE ENTHUSIAST

Iy/E regret to announce the death VV of Mr. Edwin H. A. Richardson, managing director of Associated Electric Vehicle Manufacturers, Ltd. He had held this position since the company's incorporation five years ago. Prior to this he was for several years actively connected with the electricvehicle trade. He did much to popularize the electric vehicle.
