Workers look to save jobs

DISTRIBUTION WORKERS are prepared to accept changes to their working terms and conditions if it will help preserve colleagues' jobs, according to the independent campaign Keep Britain Working.

A survey of 2,500 workers showed that 98% would accept changes to prevent job losses; 31% would be prepared to take a pay cut and 58% would accept a reduction in hours.

However, workers expect managers to make similar sacrifices; while those in the distribution sector were less likely to strike than those in other sectors, they still expect measures to be fair. In other sectors, workers were prepared to accept changes to their jobs (95%).

Half would accept reduced working hours and 29% would accept a pay cut. A third were prepared to lose benefits, 6% would take a three-month unpaid sabbatical, 19% would accept a sabbatical at 30% pay, 60% would take on new responsibilities, and almost half would change their role entirely if it meant that a colleague could keep their job.
