• AWD has launched the civilian M-type 4x4 in the UK, nearly two years after its international launch at the 1990 motor show. The new model, tagged MT12-16 or MT12-18, gets the TL hydraulic tilt cab, full-air brakes, improved payload capacity, power steering and more power from the Perkins Phaser 6.160T or 6.180Ti engines. Its launch spells the end of the road for the TK cab which was first seen in the early 1960s.

The MT was developed originally as a military logistics truck and was already available in the Middle East and Africa, As well as the 12-tonners, a 13-tonne model is planned for the UK later this year. AWD figures give a body/payload allowance of 7,24 tonnes for the 12-tonner. The sixlitre Perkins Phaser produces 119kW (160hp) at 2,600rpm and 516Nm (3811bft) of torque at 1,600rpm in turbocharged form, More power is available in charge-cooled form; 134kW (180hp) at 2,600rpm and 581Nm (428Ibft) of torque at 1,600rpm.

A five-speed synchro box linked to a two-speed transfer box provides high and low ratios and a choice of two or fourwheel-drive, The first four UK MT12-16s, fitted with Econ gritter bodies and William Bunce snowploughs, have been bought by Cheshire Highways. Orders for the vehicles have also been placed by other local authorities and electricity companies.
