• The 10,000th Motec graduate, George Cartwright (CM, May 21/, could almost be described as the complete instructor. He is a man who knows his'business and has been driving for all his professional life, and who has the cheery disposition normally associated with Yorkshiremen. In addition, George has the natural ability to communicate. No doubt his employer, R. Hanson Ltd of Wakefield, recognized these qualities when appointing him an hgv driving instructor at the company training school.

This new job came four months ago when he was driving for the company. An advertisement appeared in the local Press and on the company notice board and George, who had been biding his time for such an opportunity, was quick to reply. For five years he had been driving on general haulage work for Hanson. George suggests that this was like serving his apprenticeship for the instructor's post which he now holds.

For the five years before that he.had been a bus driver for the Yorkshire Traction Co Ltd; his psv career was preceded by a spell on light goods vehicles.

Of the future George has this to say: "It is my ambition to progress as far as can be achieved in the training field". He says this with such conviction that one is left in little doubt that this 34-year-old enthusiast will achieve his ambition.

In his opinion the most taxing driving job—and remember he has tried them all—is that of bus driver. He points out that if a goods vehicle is properly loaded and secured then all that remains for the driver to do is to take the vehicle to its destination safely. But on the psv side, with passengers constantly changing and moving while the bus is in motion the possibility of an accident is a constant factor. And although he acknowledges the economic advtages of one-man operation he abhors 0-m-a; he believes that bus drivers, in order to remain alert and give maximum consideration to passenger comfort, which is part of the job, should not be required to think about fares schedules and ticket-issuing.

Ability and luck are two essential requirements for success—George has his share of both. And there is no doubt that "Mr 10,000th" has the ability to benefit from the
