benefiting from efficiency savings implemented by warehouse managers who have attended an Efficient Warehouse Practices programme at Cranfield University this year. Since January, almost 60 DHL warehouse managers have attended the two-day course, which was developed by the university at DHL's request.

In this economic climate when we're looking at every aspect of supply-chain efficiency, the missing piece of the jigsaw lay in ensuring warehouse managers had the skills and techniques at their disposal to drive continuous improvement in our customers' supply chains," said Chris Sharp, MD operational excellence at DHL Supply Chain.

The programme covers issues such as planning and control, labour management, warehouse layout, materials handling, picking and packing, and loading.

On completion of the course, and with mentoring from a senior management representative, each delegate is tasked with producing a detailed site assessment action plan to deliver cost savings.

"I'm delighted Cranfield were keen to work with us to develop a programme tailored to warehouse practitioners. Results have been dramatic, with delegates making significant efficiency savings," said Sharp Efficiencies introduced include the use of slotting tools to improve site layout; fork lift trucks that can offload two pallets at a time; and optimising the 'pick walk'.

Over 200 DHL warehouse managers will receive the training over the next two years.
