Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Transport & General Workers Union has branded oil giant BP's latest pay offer to drivers an "insult" following revelations that BP chief executive Lord Browne earned ilm last year. The majority of BP Direct's 200 oil tanker drivers have been offered a 2.2% rise and an hour's reduction in the working week. The union says this equates to about 4.5% in real terms.

Drivers prepared to work shifts which include Saturday nights would receive a deal worth about 9.6% because their working week will be cut by three hours.

T&G road transport national secretary Danny Bryan says the deal was rejected by a "massive majoritY because drivers were not prepared to accept working Saturday nights and thought the pay deal was inadequate. "Lord Browne is paid as much for one day as union members earn in a year," he points out.

The union and company representatives are due to meet again on 19 April in a bid to thrash out an agreement.

The move came as BP announced plans to cut 500 jobs from its North Sea operations; last year the company started to downscale some of its UK operations.

• Danny Bryan has warned that industrial action at car transporter firm Axial looks "almost certain". As CM went to press more than 100 car transporter drivers were being balloted over strike action following claims that the company was introducing a pay freeze and was ditching an agreement on terms and conditions at one of its sftes.

el The second stage of a three-year pay deal for drivers in Scotland covered by the Joint Industrial Council (JIG) agreement comes into force from 1 April. Under the deal, which was agreed by the Road Haulage Association and employers, artic drivers' basic hourly rates will rise from £5.81 to .£6.21.
