at their lowest for two years. Latest Confederation of British Industry (CBI) figures show manufacturer's orders are at their lowest since December 1993. The surveys look at more than 1,000 companies each month. Overseas demand has also weakened but nevertheless Adair Turner, the CBI's director general, expects the economy to pick up towards the end of the year.
Manufacturers are also optimistic-24% expect output to rise, against 20% last month and 16% in January.
