• Chancellor Norman Lamont is under pressure to withdraw his Budget decision to tax mobile phones as a perk. Unless he does so truck drivers who have phones fitted by their employers will have to pay tax on 200 if they use the phones for private calls.
Sir William Clark, chairman of the Commons backbench finance committee, wants Lamont to change his mind.
Another effect of the Budget is that owners of nonoperational fire engines are having to pay VED for the first time — not having it withdrawn as we reported last week.
