• BT Haulage of Darlington, which is owed £35,000 by the collapsed John Dee Group, has won a contract with JD Maws. The Sunderland-based company took over British Coal work after John Dee went under.
BT owner Stuart Blackburn was "within an inch of selling up" because of the bad debt burden, according to BT manager Ian Hazeldine.
The Maws work has helped rescue the firm which runs four vehicles; two full-time and three part-time drivers have already been laid off. "We have worked damned hard and we have started to pick up," says Hazeldine, who has also secured work with three NorthEast firms.
Hazeldine is bitter about JDG's former chairman John Davison setting up shop again (CM 21-27 March): "We will never do a job for John Dee again, even for his new firm. And when you read about him wanting to change the name back to John Dee that really hits where it hurts,"
