Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Allied Transport Holdings has closed two further subsidiaries: ARS Transport of Hereford and Evans Transport of Ebbw Vale.

The move follows the closure of Glyn John Transport of Cardiff earlier this month (CM 21-27 March).

More than 70 people have so far been made redundant from the three companies.

"They were the only lossmaking subsidiaries in a cashrich transport group," says ATH's new chief executive Lance Anderson, who claims he has "done all the dirty work neatly and tidily".

The remaining eight subsidiaries, including Renwicks Freight, are "in profit with a positive cash flow", he says.

The three companies run almost 200 tractive units, trailers and rigids which will be sold off at auction next month.

Alan Steadman, manager of ARS Transport, says the company will carry on working for the next few days to finish off customers' work.

Steadman, who founded ARS and sold the business to David Unwin of ATI1 in the 1980s, does not rules out the possibility of setting up another operation.

ATH is negotiating to buy an international haulier, says Anderson, who plans a further three acquisitions in the express parcels, removals and refrigerated sectors.
